Buy Australia’s Favourite Limestone Coast Bubbly Red Shiraz Online
The family-owned winery, Majella, is famed for its red wines. One of their most exquisite is the 2020 vintage sparkling Shiraz. In case you have not heard of Majella before, we have put together a review and tasting notes. The winery can be found in the esteemed Coonawarra wine region in South Australia. We highly recommend Majella’s 2020 sparkling Shiraz. The added drop of port takes the wine to completely new heights. We also love that this wine is ready to open immediately while also being suitable to cellar for a decade or more.
Majella Winery, Coonawarra, SA (Limestone Coast Wine)
The Majella winery boasts 60 luscious hectares of vines that are predominantly Cabernet and Shiraz. They also have small plots of Merlot and Riesling(*1). The region may be small compared to other South Australian wine regions, but it is by no means lacking. First plantings date back to the 1860s, although it wasn’t until the 1950s that this region’s wine started being acknowledged(*2). The soil is unique and highly sought after by winemakers and viticulturists.
Proudly Australian – Sparkling Red Wine
As Brian “Prof” Lynn (Co-Director of Majella Wines) says, Australia is one of the only countries to put our still red wines through the champagne method to create sparkling reds(*3). What can we say! Australians love the bubbles. There is no better sparkling Shiraz to celebrate with than Majella Wines’ 2020 sparkling Shiraz.
Over 25 Years of Awards!
1995 was the year Majella Wines first released their sparkling Shiraz(*3). Since then, the winery has taken home more than 900 trophies. No less than 25 of those have been solely for their sparkling Shiraz! (*4,5)
2020 Majella Sparkling Shiraz – Review and Tasting Notes
After a scorching summer with fierce bushfires, vineyards in Coonawarra were lucky to have had a successful harvest in early autumn(*6). Overall, fruit yields were down across the region. The positive side to this was that the fruit was bursting with flavour, excellent concentration and subtle tannins(*6).
Aging and Complexity
After being aged in French oak, a small amount of vintage port is added to Majella’s sparkling Shiraz. The port gives this rich and full-bodied red the perfect amount of complexity(*1). It has a beautiful fine bead of bubbles and has a nice ‘pop’ when you open the bottle. If you like bubbly reds and have a celebration coming up, Majella Wines’ sparkling Shiraz is an excellent choice.
Open for Immediate Enjoyment or Cellar
If you decide whether to open or lay down in the cellar, you can do either with this Shiraz. It can be stored for as long as a decade (or longer)(*1).
Aroma: Notes of plum, raspberries, and blackberries(*1).
Palate: Smoothed and balanced with gentle tannins(*1).
Finish: Generous, full finish(*1).
The value of this wine is as impressive as the wine itself. It is priced from $32, and the elegant design makes it ideal for the dinner table(*1).
