2023 Rouleur Pinot Noir Yarra Valley – The Rouleur philosophy is pretty simple. They source exceptional parcels of fruit from quality vineyards and growers to make wine that they, and hopefully you, like to drink. They tend to pick on the earlier side, seeking bright acid, freshness and lift without sacrificing flavour. Their aim is to capture terroir by not messing with the natural order too much, keeping winemaker inputs and additions to a minimum. Rouleur wines are handmade in small batches to deliver their take on the varieties and vineyards they work with. A delicious and personal perspective on each vintage year.
In 2018, Matt East had a brief hiatus from making Yarra Valley Pinot, and was offered up a parcel of incredibly high quality fruit from Merricks on the Mornington Peninsula to play with instead. This is that foray, and wowsers what a wine it is. Lifted, floral and aromatic, it has the quintessential dark fruits that Mornington Pinot is known for, with a little garrigue and undergrowth for good measure.
The aromatics are pretty and lifted, there’s strawberry, a hint of black cherry, undergrowth and bramble-like spice to follow. The wine has bright acidity and plenty of fleshy red fruits anchored by fine savoury tannins.
