2023 Rouleur Pinot Gris et al Yarra Valley – The Rouleur philosophy is pretty simple. They source exceptional parcels of fruit from quality vineyards and growers to make wine that they, and hopefully you, like to drink. They tend to pick on the earlier side, seeking bright acid, freshness and lift without sacrificing flavour. Their aim is to capture terroir by not messing with the natural order too much, keeping winemaker inputs and additions to a minimum. Rouleur wines are handmade in small batches to deliver their take on the varieties and vineyards they work with. A delicious and personal perspective on each vintage year.
Similar to last vintage, the 2023 Pinot Gris blend consists of 92% Pinot Gris, 6% Chardonnay and 2% Gewurztraminer.
Vibrant and light orange tinged from skin contact, this Gris blend displays orange blossom, musk and mandarin with hints of Turkish Delight too. There’s tight fleshed pear, over squeezed citrus and baked apple spice, maybe that’s the Gewurz popping up and saying “hi, I’m here too” Maybe…
Picked early, this isn’t a rich, powerful Gris – deliberately a more elegant style. But there’s a wonderful rolling texture providing weight and mouthfeel along with mineral acid and subtle grip keeping the wine upright to the finish.
