2022 Agricola Ebenezer Shiraz Barossa Valley – The Powell family have been making award winning wines in the Barossa for decades. Now son Callum has released his on Barossa label. These wines are totally different to your usual big, bold reds of the Barrosa – lower alcohol, lo-fi, pure and elegant.
This release sees 4 wines in the range – Ebenezer, Flaxman Valley, Kalimna Sands and Theel’s Handfibel. All wines spent 12 months in oak, with less than 10% of it being new oak. Flaxman and Kalimna tend to be in larger puncheons and demi-muid while Ebenezer and Theel’s Handfibel for the most part have been aged in barriques 225L. All wild fermented with no adds aside from some sulfur late in the process. Everything is 100% whole bunch and ferments for 3-4 weeks.
Fruit for this wine is sourced from Hoffmann’s 1951-planted Dimchurch Home Old Vineyard and Hoffmann’s 1888-1912-planted Dallwitz Old Vineyard.
The first thing you notice is the alcohol level of 14.2%. But don’t fear there is still plenty of flavour and character to be had. Definitely more of a Syrah style. Fresh, fresh, fresh! A stack of mineral complexity, red berries, white pepper, herbs, spice, liquorice and darker fruits. Cooling acidity. Tannins are extremely fine. Such intensity and character. Delicious!
