2021 Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No. 1 Yarra Valley – Planted in 1969, the unirrigated vines at their Yarra Valley vineyard produce elegant, complex and powerful wines. Approachable as young wines, they have the ability to develop in the bottle for many years. Yarra Yering is one of Australia’s most iconic wineries with an outstanding international reputation.
At the helm of one of the Yarra Valley’s best wineries is Sarah Crowe. In August, 2016 Sarah was awarded one of the wine industry’s highest honours, being named by James Halliday as Winemaker of the Year 2017 at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Merlot 24%, Malbec 11% & Petit Verdot 5%. The first plantings at Yarra Yering into block No.1 were these Cabernet vines and the name was born. The Malbec was also part of the original 1969 plantings. Some Merlot vines are interplanted with the Cabernet with subsequent plantings made in 1990 on the newly acquired neighbouring land. Petit verdot is now only grown on the hillside of the new territories.
Black berry fruits and a rustic iodine feel compliment some bay leaf adding a background herbal lift. Mixed brown spices and a hint of oak; flavour and tannin. Beautiful fruit, refreshing acidity and fine tannins form a solid foundation for a long future. Complex but not intimidating, always exciting to watch evolve.
Ideally some bottle maturation will give this wine time to unfurl. Under suitable cellaring conditions it will evolve for 20+ years if you wish to show restraint, otherwise choose your occasion and enjoy!
