2021 Head Wines The Contrarian Shiraz Barossa Valley – Alex Head’s wines are powerfully individual, intriguing, hard to categorise, these are drawn from signature vineyards and show Alex Head at his most uncompromising; hands-on, bold and risk-taking. Most of all though, they are pure expressions of their Barossa and Eden Valley home.
The Contrarian is their expression of European style Barossa Shiraz. They source fruit from the granite-based vineyards of the Eden Valley, Barossa. Considerably more whole-bunches are used in the fermentation and maceration. This wine reflects Alex’s curious and creative desire to explore the limits of terroir and winemaking styles within the Barossa.
Each vintage Alex likes to express the Barossa in a contrary manner and ‘The Contrarian’ is his indulgent, creative winemaking outlet and challenges traditional concepts around Barossan Shiraz. They source Shiraz from vineyards in the Eden Valley which develop flavour at lower than usual alcohols and show ripeness in their stems too. They use a different medium for fermentation in cement; which holds the acidity and tannins in a fresher light. They mature (instead of age) the wine in oak that is 10 times larger than a traditional barrel and bottle a little earlier too. They love what they see in this expression of the Barossa and feel it is a style worthy of your table.
Such a beautiful aromatic wine, one that hits all the right spots and leaves you wanting more – dried herbs, blue berry, blackcurrant and everything good! A medium bodied palate flooded with elegance, complexity and sophistication. Finishing with incredible length, an abundance of fruit and fine tannins which leaves you with an empty bottle dangerously quick.
Arguably one of the best value wines Alex Head creates and this vintage is no exception!
