2019 LS Merchants Jolliffe Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River – When you meet a grower who has such a special block sometimes reason has to go out the window purely in pursuit of making the best wine possible. This happened to them in 2019 when they met Mark Jolliffe, grower of arguably some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in Wilyabrup if not Margaret River. Old vines, un-irrigated, northern facing slopes, high gravel content and Houghtons selection clone with a small amount of SA126.
2019 was a somewhat tough year for Cabernet in Margaret River, a cool and wet season meant that extreme patience was required for the fruit to reach optimal ripeness. In years like this they end up with wines of elegance and poise, similar to 2015 and 2017.
They went into this vineyard knowing that the tannins were going to be powerful and potentially difficult to deal with so having a year like 2019 has allowed them to ‘get their eye in’. 30 Days on skins before being basket pressed to 50% new and 50% one year old french oak barriques. 18 months of aging before blending and bottling (unfined, filtered).
This wine has incredible concentration and depth, cassis and dark forest fruits. Hints of bay leaf and raspberry acidity with supple, fine, long tannins. It has the structure and power to last 15+ years in the cellar but still presents extremely well as a young wine.
