2019 Head Wines Ancestor Vine Grenache Eden Valley – Alex Head’s crowning glory, created only when nature plays along. Whether it’s a glorious Grenache from Eden Valley’s century-old vines or a Grand Cru Barossa Shiraz, these single-site, small parcel wines will enchant, inspire and reward over time.
From Stonegarden, a 162 year old vineyard planted near Springton at 400m altitude in the coldest, driest and most remote part of the Eden Valley. The vines struggle to yield 1/2 tonne/acre on sandy loam over yellow clay and granite. Some whole-bunches are utilised in the fermentation. Numbered bottle; only 650 produced.
Medium bodied with high intensity of flavour and character. Juicy red berries, a dusting of spice, floral notes, chuck some darker fruits into the mix, lovely acid balance and dry, firm tannins giving the wine exceptional structure. Enjoy now over a good decant or watch it spread its wings in a few years. 10+ years ageing potential.
