2020 Standish Wine Co The Standish Shiraz Barossa Valley

From: $140.00

2020 Standish Wine Co The Standish Shiraz Barossa Valley – 100% Shiraz – Sourced from the Laycock Vineyard – Parbs Road, Greenock, Barossa Valley Planted on own roots in 2002 (1.39 Hectare – 9ft x 6ft spacing) Ironstone gravels and schist over dark red clays at 314m above sea level.

A vintage that Dan is extremely happy with, the wines showing all the definition, complexity and balance you would expect from him. You will see these wines already have stunning reviews, some of his best work yet.

2020 dealt the driest growing season in 60 years. With no Winter, Spring or Summer rain to speak of, their old vines gave them the tiniest berries they have ever seen at super-low yields. This translated to the most stunningly dense and concentrated wines with extraordinary colour and tannin with a silky smooth, almost creamy texture. One could almost say that these 2020 wines are caricatures of their respective vineyard plots, which will easily live beyond 25 years.

Standish’s bright, luscious Shiraz’s each reveal refined, multi-layers of graceful tannin; fleshy and distinguished. While unmistakably Barossan, this vintage carries an elegance akin to a Northern Rhone offering – an atypical shift resulting from a more modest variation of our renowned ‘blow-dry’ summer heat.

Barrel de-classification took a leading role for these creations, bottling less than one third of production, retaining only the crème de la crème for the final cuvees. The role that soil, site and aspect play is distinctly evident in each of these single site wines as they show their most unique tones to date.

Dense, latent and strapping, this flaunts the flawless purity. Tightly wound with its cards close to the vest, deep-set aromatics of herbal tea, red and black berries, pressed currant, liquorice and black truffle are foiled by redolent tones of tilled soil, beef broth and slow roasted meats. Dark and brooding with immense concentration, complexity, persistence and energy it is gently laced with a long fine cloak of silken tannin. More reticent than its stable mate, it shows wonderful staying power for those with immense patience and cool, dark cellars.

This could be the perfect Barossa Shiraz but we will leave that up to you to decide.
