2019 The Willows Vineyard G Seven Grenache Barossa Valley

From: $32.00

2019 The Willows Vineyard G Seven Grenache Barossa Valley – 100% Grenache, Old Vine, Single block, planted in 1969 by 5th generation William “Bert” Scholz. The block is dry grown on sand over deep alluvial soil in a loop of the North Para River. The Grenache thrives on the free draining sand and experiences the cool gully breezes that follow the North Para out of the hills.

The 2018/19 season was dry, with autumn, winter, spring and summer rainfall all below average. The dry soils and cooler than average spring nights resulted in 2 significant frost events in the Barossa that impacted pockets of our vineyard, reducing yields. January was quite warm, but thankfully gave way in February to milder, more favourable ripening conditions. The washup was lean yields, abundant flavour. The drought tolerant Grenache was a standout variety in the 2019 vintage. Handpicked 8th March.

The fruit was fermented in 3 separate small batches; traditionally destemmed and crushed, 15% whole bunch and 30% whole bunch. On skins for 10-12 days with hand plunging. Basket pressed to seasoned French oak. Malolactic fermentation in barrel and 10 months barrel maturation.

Opens with lifted red fruits, lavender florals, and savoury spice. The palate reveals red licorice and raspberry that progresses to more complex, savoury notes of earth, graphite and peppercorn spice. Structurally the tannins are ruffled, running long and even.
