Coates Barrel Selection Shiraz & Touriga Nacional McLaren Vale Langhorne Creek – Owner winemaker Duane Coates is based in McLaren Vale and sources premium fruit from such quality regions as Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills and the Clare Valley to produce a wide range of styles. He selects parcels of fruit from the traditional varieties of the region through to newer alternative varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Sangiovese. He also makes a range fortified styles and a classic sparkling Shiraz. His wines are handcrafted in an Old World savoury style; due to time he spent making wine in Burgundy and the Rhone Valley, France. He also spent time learning the craft of fortified wine production in the Douro Valley, Portugal.
Flavour, tannin and sugar ripe grapes were picked at 13.5 Baume to retain vibrancy and acidity. A three-hour ‘Corte’ of foot treading was performed to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins. Natural yeast fermentation progressed over 78 hours before pressing then fortification with a blend of white Brandy spirits selected to add character and compliment the base wine. Maturation for 24 month in seasoned French oak with a single racking and regular topping. RS of 80 g/L, which is a touch drier than most Portuguese VP’s, although the apparent sweetness looks much higher. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in April 2010.
