2023 William Downie Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula

From: $55.00

2023 William Downie Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula – William Downie established his own label in 2003 after several years living and working in Burgundy. His intention is to produce wines of purity and detail that reflect their place of origin. They are made in the most natural way possible, not pushed or shoved in any direction.

The 2023 harvest has created a collection of complex and enjoyable wines that include, for the first time since 2016, a bottling from the Mornington Peninsula. They are all fine and approachable now but each will reward the more patient among us. The wines from their own vineyards, Bull Swamp and Camp Hill, produced only around 1 tonne of grapes per hectare largely as a result, yet again, of poor flowering. While this has not adversely affected quality, it has severely restricted availability.

2023 Mornington Peninsula – Fruit was sourced from the Mrs Nicks vineyard in Balnarring and Rivendel in Merricks North. Mrs Nicks was planted to MV6 in 1998 on a gently south facing hill of chocolate brown sandy loam. Rivendel, planted in the same year, is a mix of D5V12 and Pommard clones of pinot noir on  grey sandy loam and is the same vineyard that our 2007 Mornington Peninsula wine came from. Aromas of violets, raspberry and chinotto. The wine is dense and complex with a concentrated but fine palate.
