2023 Even Keel Joven Tempranillo Mornington – The team over at Polperro have created this exceptional little label. They grow, make and farm their vineyards using a philosophy of sustainability and regenerative agriculture, applying a mix of biological, bio-dynamic and organic practices.
Even Keel Joven Tempranillo is the wineries happy little accident. When the fruit came off that usually goes into making their Rose the press was all tied up with a backlog of white grapes. They decided to put the fruit to the side and press it later once there was time available. By the time they remembered about the fruit it had well and truly kicked off fermenting (carbonically). And so the Joven Tempranillo was born.
There are notes of charcuterie, violet and dark cherry on the nose. On the palate it’s all dusty, velvety tannins with dark cherry tang bringing refreshing acidity. An excellent food wine, it wants bold flavours, grilled meats and seafood. It also drinks happily on its own, slightly chilled or at room temperature.
