2021 Michael Hall Mount Torrens Syrah Adelaide Hills – Rather than moulding the fruit to a style, Michael is interested in passively crafting wine with as few material inputs as possible: Hand picking, maceration, wild yeasts, lees contact, barrel maturation and no filtration. Allowing the season and site to show themselves.
He thinks about how the sun shone and the rain precipitated during the season. The influence of the growers and the many hands that tended, picked and sorted the grapes. The yeasts that occurred naturally and the signature of the coopers and their forests. Then those evolving bottles, being opened and shared at tables around the world. The connection the wine makes with passionately prepared food, evoking memories or creating a new and memorable experience for someone, perhaps thousands of miles from where the grapes ripened.
Firstly, WOW… From the very first sniff to the very last sip, this wine just impressed. Such an excellent expression of the Syrah style. Medium bodied, fleshy and textured, spicy red fruits, sprinkling of white pepper, fresh violet perfume, five spice and green herbs. Threads of tannin carrying this beautiful wine. We could talk all day about this wine but to put it simply… Just WOW.
Unfortunately this may be the very last vintage made from this amazing vineyard. Due to the tough terrain this vineyard is grown in the vineyard did not produce fruit for the 2019 vintage and was wiped out by the bush fires in 2020. Not looking good for such outstanding wine.
