2021 Michael Hall Flaxman’s Valley Syrah Eden Valley – Rather than moulding the fruit to a style, Michael is interested in passively crafting wine with as few material inputs as possible: Hand picking, maceration, wild yeasts, lees contact, barrel maturation and no filtration. Allowing the season and site to show themselves.
He thinks about how the sun shone and the rain precipitated during the season. The influence of the growers and the many hands that tended, picked and sorted the grapes. The yeasts that occurred naturally and the signature of the coopers and their forests. Then those evolving bottles, being opened and shared at tables around the world. The connection the wine makes with passionately prepared food, evoking memories or creating a new and memorable experience for someone, perhaps thousands of miles from where the grapes ripened.
At 520m elevation the Naimanya vineyard is amongst the highest Shiraz vineyards in South Australia. Adjacent to the Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park, redolent with prehistoric rock and vegetation, it’s composed of degraded sandstone and granitic gneiss with a high quartz content. The fruit was hand-picked on the 11th of April, 95% destemmed, wild yeast fermented, pressed and matured for 18 months in French oak hogsheads (20% new, Saint Martin).
This wine possesses power and elegance. Dark berries, red currants, spices and a touch of leather. So complex and well put together. Generosity but all in balance. Good oak influence without being dominant. Drinking extremely well in its youth but has a long life ahead of it.
