2019 Jericho GSM McLaren Vale – Jericho Wines is a new and exciting wine brand brought to you by the Jericho family: Neil, Kaye, Sally, Andrew, and Kim. Neil and Andrew have crafted the wines, with 50 years of wine making between them. Kim, the graphic artist has designed the labels, with Sally and Kaye support the family business and administration.
They look to make wines that reflect the vineyard and the variety – that are a true reflection of the soil, the climate and showcase these differences through careful winemaking choices. It has been a conscious decision for them to only produce small batches of handcrafted wines of elegance and sophistication.
Grenache fruit is grown in the well renown region of Blewitt Springs which is quickly becoming – after 60 years or more – well known for a distinctive style and quality of Grenache in Australia.
The focus of this wine is the Grenache with the other varieties adding structure and complexity to the overall blend. Grenache (82%) had partial whole bunch fermentation, which gives the wine its vibrant red berry characteristics. It was then aged in older french oak barrels to retain the fresh and vibrant. Careful use of Shiraz (15%) adds structure to the wine and the Mourvedre (3%) adds spiciness. Grenache is one of the traditional varieties of McLaren Vale, so they wanted this to be the hero. They were very careful that neither the Shiraz nor Mourvedre were to dominate the blend but to add subtle complexity to the Grenache.
