2019 Giant Steps Applejack Vineyard Chardonnay Yarra Valley – Steve Flamsteed is at it again with another rocking vintage for his 2019 wines.
Applejack Vineyard, in the upper Yarra Valley, was planted by respected viticulturist Ray Guerin and is managed by his son Mark. The higher altitude results in a cooler and extended growing season, ideally suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (3-4 weeks later than central Yarra valley). Applejack Vineyard is located on a dramatic slope and is close planted and fastidiously managed. The basalt based underlying volcanic soil and rock produce a characteristically fine yet extended, spicy and firm palate.
Good winter rains left the ground with a healthy amount of moisture resources. Canopies were large and healthy and the fruit set was extraordinarily successful. There was a “green” fruit thin back to one bunch per shoot and the vine/fruit balance was perhaps the best seen in years. After a warm January, the flavours and skin ripeness came on very quickly. Even though days were warm, nights were cool. The grapes were picked very early to maintain fresh natural acidity and the Chardonnay bunches were turgid and pristine.
Stone and flint licks to taste, a squeeze of grapefruit, green apple, pickled ginger, sparkling almost in its transparent whip-crack across the palate.
