2020 Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No. 1 Yarra Valley

From: $130.00

2020 Yarra Yering Dry Red Wine No. 1 Yarra Valley – Planted in 1969, the unirrigated vines at their Yarra Valley vineyard produce elegant, complex and powerful wines. Approachable as young wines, they have the ability to develop in the bottle for many years. Yarra Yering is one of Australia’s most iconic wineries with an outstanding international reputation.

At the helm of one of the Yarra Valley’s best wineries is Sarah Crowe. In August, 2016 Sarah was awarded one of the wine industry’s highest honours, being named by James Halliday as Winemaker of the Year 2017 at the Halliday Wine Companion Awards.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 67%, Merlot 15%, Malbec 12% & Petit Verdot 6%. The first plantings at Yarra Yering into block No.1 were these Cabernet vines and the name was born. The Malbec was also part of the original 1969 plantings. Some Merlot vines are interplanted with the Cabernet with subsequent plantings made in 1990 on the newly acquired neighbouring land. Petit verdot is now only grown on the hillside of the new territories.

Fruit power is the hallmark of this blend, dark berry fruits and some sage adding a background herbal lift. Christmas cake mixed spice and a whisper of oak; all in balance. Beautiful fruit, a bright acid drive and tannins that form a solid foundation for a long future. Brooding but not intimidating, always exciting to watch evolve.

Upon bottling this wine looks and tastes shy, needing some bottle maturation to unfurl. Under suitable cellaring conditions it will evolve for 20+ years if you wish to show restraint, otherwise choose  your occasion and enjoy!
