2021 Standish Wine Co The Relic Shiraz Viognier Barossa Valley

From: $140.00

2021 Standish Wine Co The Relic Shiraz Viognier Barossa Valley – Hongell Family Vineyard, Krondorf, 99% Shiraz and 1% Viognier. Planted on own roots in 1912 (7.6 Hectares – 12ft x 10ft spacing). Fine white sand over deep heavy red clay at 302m above sea level.

2021 is a vintage that Dan is extremely happy with, the wines showing all the definition, complexity and balance you would expect from him. You will see these wines already have stunning reviews, some of his best work yet.

Standish’s bright, luscious Shiraz’s each reveal refined, multi-layers of graceful tannin; fleshy and distinguished. While unmistakably Barossan, this vintage carries an elegance akin to a Northern Rhone offering – an atypical shift resulting from a more modest variation of our renowned ‘blow-dry’ summer heat.

Barrel de-classification took a leading role for these creations, bottling less than one third of production, retaining only the crème de la crème for the final cuvees. The role that soil, site and aspect play is distinctly evident in each of these single site wines as they show their most unique tones to date.

Fragrantly scented, taughtly structured and finely poised – this Relic represents the more reserved face of the Barossa. Delicately portioned and beautifully balanced its fragrant notes of blue and blackberries and parfait amour are supported by an underlying swath of pepper, cocoa, coffee and damp limestone. You wouldn’t expect it but the small amount of Viognier is a significant factor in this wine adding the extra complexity of stone fruits and spices. Supple, lithe and without any hint of ‘palate drag’, the wine is drinking incredibly well already but has decades of enjoyment ahead.

This could be one of Australia’s Best examples of the Shiraz Viognier blend.
