2017 Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier Eden Valley – Throughout Barossa and Coonawarra, pockets of carefully tended vines have been hand-selected to provide the fruit for their very best and most sought-after wines. Crafted only when all the elements of viticulture and winemaking interact perfectly, their Rare & Fine wines are the very best examples of the varieties and blends that have found a natural home here in Australia during the past five generations.
In 1980, with help from the Yalumba nursery, the first commercial Viognier vines in Australia were planted on their neighbour’s Eden Valley vineyard. Today, old vine Viognier grapes are carefully selected from this special site to craft The Virgilus.
Pale gold with green highlights. The nose has intense aromas of early season just picked apricots, cardamom, white pepper and fresh ginger. Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral sourdough like texture and complex apricot and almond savouriness. The trademark Viognier lusciousness of the palate is clearly evident in this wine. It is complex while at the same time showing purity and restraint that will unwind slowly in the glass and take the imbiber on a sensory journey.
