2017 Tyrrell’s Shiraz 375ml Hunter Valley – A selection of some of Tyrrell’s top blocks on the Estate and surrounding area, most of which are dry grown and averaging 40 years in vine age.
The 2017 vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality. Solid rains in winter and spring meant the vines had constant access to water and the warmer weather in the new year meant all of the fruit was in near perfect condition and ripeness when it was harvested.
The Hunter Valley Shiraz is made to the same high standards that their flagship Vat 9 Shiraz receives. The grapes were picked before fermentation in the open top vats. The wine was then matured in older, large format French oak casks. These 2,700 litre casks highlight the fruit purity whilst making sure that oak isn’t the dominant character.
Vibrant purple colour, with a lifted nose showing red fruits and some spice. The palate has wonderful concentration and depth yet still lively and fresh. The tannins are expansive yet remain soft and the acidity adds to the wines complexity. A wonderful example of the modern, medium bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz.
