2019 Tenuta San Guido Le Difese Toscana

From: $45.00

2019 Tenuta San Guido Le Difese Toscana – Le Difese (Toscana IGT) is produced by Tenuta San Guido since 2003. It is a Cabernet and Sangiovese blend. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperature and maceration lasts for about 12-18 days for both the Cabernet Sauvignon to the Sangiovese. It is then aged for 8 months in French oak barrels and for a further three months in the bottle. The wine is distinguished by a good structure and is extremely supple making it very pleasant and drinkable.

Production was slightly lower than average but of excellent quality. The optimal weather conditions that characterized the year and especially the period of phenolic ripening resulted into healthy, well-ripened and aromatic grapes with lower sugar. The result was a balanced must, adequately sapid and with perfect harmony between the anthocyanin structure and the acidity of the wine. Excellent balance in terms of acidity, pH and structure are the main features of this vintage 2018 of Le Difese.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, the Le Difese shows a more evident touch of ripe fruit that you don’t perceive in the Guidalberto, which makes me think it comes from the Sangiovese component that is only used in this wine. The overall effect of that ripeness is that it downplays the wine’s inner complexity. But this entry-level red from Tenuta San Guido was never aiming for huge complexity to begin with. Dark cherry and cherry is followed by wild strawberry and tangy rose hip. This wine happily delivers on its promises of freshness and accessibility.
