The amazing team at Petersons Wines has been crafting sublime wines since the 1970s in the Hunter Valley. Their first vintage in the 1980s concreted them firmly as esteemed (award-winning) Hunter Valley wine growers and winemakers.

Today’s selection includes vintages from the Petersons’ Hunter Valley and Mudgee land parcels. These include three white wines: Cuvee Chardonnay, Semillon, and Verdelho, and two medium-bodied reds: Shiraz and Shiraz Cabernet. The Petersons’ slogan is ‘Wines of Distinction’(*2). In our opinion, they couldn’t have said it better. Leading the way in winemaking in the Hunter Valley and Mudgee regions, the Petersons’ family legacy has been shaping up to be one of the absolute best in wine across the country since 1971.

Petersons’ Mudgee Expansion (and its Comparison to the Hunter Valley)

In 1996, Petersons expanded their portfolio to include land from the stunning Mudgee region(*1). Neighbours, Mudgee, and the Hunter Valley offer vintners an eden of rich soil, beautiful Mediterranean climate, good rainfall and long ripening periods(*3,4). Mudgee vineyards predominantly grow red grape varietals (76% red versus 47% red in the Hunter Valley)(*3,4) albeit if their most popular wine made in the area is Chardonnay (22%) – closely followed by Shiraz(21%)(*3).

First up are three of our favourite white wines from Petersons’ stand-out range.

Petersons Vintage Cuvee Chardonnay, Hunter Valley (A Store Favourite)

Petersons Cuvee Chardonnay (Vintage) Available to Buy in Half (375ml) or Full (750ml) Bottles

Aroma: Hints of oak, biscuit dough and nuts are complemented by heavenly lifted notes of rock melon, mango, pineapple, and tropical fruits(*5-7).
Palate: Naturally complex, soft, and rich with brilliant oak, fruit qualities (honeydew melon, apricot, tangerine), cinnamon and a touch of crisp citrus(*5-7).
Finish: An easy-drinking dry wine with an elegant, long finish(*7).

Price: From $17.99 for the Cuvee Chardonnay half bottle, and from $25 for the Cuvee Chardonnay full bottle.

The Cuvee Chardonnay is a little bit different because it is a blend of three different vintages. This is a store favourite. You’ll find lots of stone fruits in this classic style of Chardonnay(*1).

The Semillon is fresh and rounded with lots of zesty goodness(*1). It is one of the best Semillons produced by Petersons thanks to an excellent growing season(*8).

Aroma: A clear and confident bouquet of lime and zesty lemon, mandarin, and a whisper of freshly cut grass(*8).

Palate: Fresh, soft, dry, rounded, and tight. Grapefruit pith, juicy lemon and a touch of honeysuckle are noticeable initially, then nice natural acidity and softness for a cleansing palate(*8).

Finish: That cleansing palate continues through to the finish making this wine ideal to pair with fish and creamy white sauce or roast pork(*8).

The third wine we are looking at today is the Verdelho, a dry style that is high on tropical fruits and citrus with a clean finish(*1,9).

Aroma: A gorgeous fruit salad bouquet!(*9).

Palate: A gentle palate that starts with grapefruit and gently leans into passionfruit, lychee, pineapple, kiwi fruit, and orange blossom(*9).

Finish: A slightly acidic and dry finish(*9).

Price: From $25 for a full bottle of Petersons 2021 Verdelho.

Petersons make some incredible red wines with depth, body, and complexity. Below are just a couple from their range of reds.

Petersons Shiraz, Mudgee

Petersons Shiraz Available to Buy in Half (375ml) or Full (750ml) Bottles

Aroma: A bewitching combination of ripe, dark crimson and raven-black fruits with a pinch of pepper, aniseed and tobacco(*1,10-12).
Palate: Medium to full-bodied (crowd pleaser) with soft, dry tannins, plump cherries and plums(*1,10-12).
Finish: A long satisfying finish(*1,10-12).

Price: From $19.99 for the half bottle of Shiraz from Petersons or from $32 for the full bottle of this 2021 Vintage Shiraz.

This is beautiful drinking now and a good one to cellar up to 2027 – 2028(*12).

The first red we are looking at is the easy-drinking Shiraz(*1). Like the Cuvee Chardonnay, Petersons also offer the Shiraz in half and full-size bottles

Aroma: A bewitching combination of ripe, dark crimson and raven-black fruits with a pinch of pepper, aniseed and tobacco(*1,10-12).

Palate: Medium to full-bodied (crowd pleaser) with soft, dry tannins, plump cherries and plums(*1,10-12).

Finish: A long satisfying finish(*1,10-12).

Price: From $19.99 for the half bottle of Shiraz from Petersons or from $32 for the full bottle of this 2021 Vintage Shiraz.

This is beautiful drinking now and a good one to cellar up to 2027 – 2028(*12).

Last but not least for today is the second red in our picks from Petersons’ premium vintage – the Shiraz Cabernet. Ready to enjoy now with hearty meals such as pepper and steak pies, barbequed meats, and mushroom risotto(*13).

Aroma: Vibrant, layered bouquet that includes sour cherry, forest fruits, earth and a faint note of wood smoke(*1,13).

Palate: Juicy, dry, and fresh medium-bodied wine with a good variety of deep red and purplish fruits such as alpine strawberry, blackberry and boysenberry(*1,13).

Finish: Dry mixed herbs make an appearance before a dry, soft, and long finish alongside cleansing acidity(*1,13).
