Summer Hill Wine Shop Reviews the Classic Louis Roederer Champagne

This French classic has been adorning end-of-year celebrations, engagements, weddings and weekend get-togethers since 1883. The Louis Roederer estate turned to wine-making to keep the House afloat during the harsh times of the First and Second World Wars(*1-2).

What resulted? A continuous yield of three grape varieties. After they are blended and aged in oak, they combine to become what we now know as Brut Premier.
Take a sip of the very champagne that filled the glasses of the great dining halls of Russia’s Tsar, Alexander II in the mid-1800s(*2).

Louis Roederer Champagne – A 200-Year-Old Legacy Continues

The Roederer house is a name etched in French and wine-making history. No champagne collection is complete without the inclusion of Brut Premier… Nor is any celebration.

The Roederer’s have been independently running the family wine business since its establishment over 200 years ago. Seven generations later, the modern heirs are as devoted to the vineyards as Louis himself(*2).

Hand-Picked and Nurtured

The Roederer house has a profound respect for the offerings of nature. They nurture each vine and work with local ecology and biodiversity to grow ripe, healthy and flavourful fruits every season(*3).

Every grape, plant and parcel of soil is examined, checked and kept healthy by the passionate teams at the vineyards. Grapes are hand-picked and meticulously pressed at the harvest sites.
Each plot of land was selected for its unique climate and soil type. Pristine champagne grapes grow across 240 hectares of vineyards.

Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier grow in Louis Roederer owned and managed vineyards located in(*2):

• Vallée de la Marne.
• Montagne de Reims.
• Côte des Blancs.

Blend, Finish and Aging

Brut Premier is matured, lively and consistently impressive year in, year out. The Brut Premier blend is made from three individual batches of each of their grape varieties. Each batch is aged for varying periods (multi-vintage) to achieve the perfect drop every time(*1-2, 4).

Blend: Brut Premier has a rich, textural style made from a multi-vintage blend of approximately(*4):

• 20% Pinot Meunier.
• 40% Pinot noir.
• 40% Chardonnay.

Aging: For three years, the wines age in oak and then a further six months or more after disgorging(*1-2, 4).
Bouquet: The bouquet is distinctly fresh, with a hint of sweet summer fruits.
Finish: Crisp and dry on the finish.
